Godwin Akpan, Executive Director, Founder
Godwin L. Akpan was born and raised in a rural agricultural setting in Akwa-Ibom State, Nigeria. Working on the farm with his parents to produce organic foods (crops, livestock and poultry) as a young child, he developed a strong interest in farming and agriculture. As an adult, he worked in Nigeria as a farmer, high school teacher, and humanitarian activist.
Mr. Akpan is the founder of UHSC and has headed the organization for the past 22 years. He has directed several urban community agricultural projects and has also assisted individuals & families who have witnessed or lived through disturbing domestic challenges. He continues leading with a very strong passion for rural farming and has acquired many acres of farmland in Pembroke, Illinois. With support from the University of Illinois Extension, Mr. Akpan is proposing a farmer training project to benefit the homeless and low-income population of that area as well as those economically stressed within the New City neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois.
